How to get the most out of your yoga practice…

Attending yoga classes is an investment: an investment in your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. It’s also an investment of your hard-earned cash and valuable time. But those who have experienced the post-yoga high, the mental clarity of mind and physical suppleness that emerges from a consistent yoga practice understand that the time and money you put in is so very minimal compared to what you gain in return. However, we humans are skilled at self-sabotage, so here are some simple words of wisdom to follow so that you can obtain the maximum return on your investment.

 Be kind

Our thoughts are heard by our heart and soul. Why do we send messages of love, encouragement and acceptance to the people we love; yet the dialogue we have with ourselves is hurtful and destructive? A yoga practice can never be perfect, and that is why it is called a practice, not a skill. Everyone must start somewhere, even your teachers, and their teachers and their teachers.

Expect the unexpected

Each day your mind and body will be different to the day before; poses won’t feel the same, your balance might come and go, emotions arise, thoughts settle or maybe you just cannot relax. This is normal. Repeat after me: I am not going crazy. I am not failing. I am working on myself each and every day, and some days this will be a little harder. And this is okay. Change makes me feel alive.

Arrive with an open mind

Thankfully yoga has infiltrated into mainstream culture and is now accessible to a wider audience than ever before. However, this has led to the creation of some close-minded opinions and beliefs about what yoga should look like and entail. Modern-day yoga is informed by a multitude of ancient yogic practices and principles that each look, feel and sound very different. This diversity has created the wonderful melting pot of yoga classes on offer today, which means there is something for everyone. Attend yoga classes with an open mind, and remain grateful for each and every student and teacher.

Consistency is key

Carving out the time in your week to devote to you: your mental health, your physical strength, flexibility and relaxation, as well as space to listen and time to breathe. The more time we dedicate to our practice, the quieter the outside noise becomes. Gradually you will notice the lines between your mat and your real-life start to dissolve. This is the ultimate aim of yoga: integration of the principles of yoga into your day-to-day life.

Lastly, this is your practice and no one else’s. Listen to your body, take it slow, let go of your ego, and most of all: don’t take yourself too seriously.

Namaste.
