What is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is a form of physical therapy that provides the evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain. The term ‘myo’ means muscle. Therefore, the muscular system is a primary focus of a myotherapy treatment. Treatment will depend on each individual presentation and may involve a range of techniques.

Some of the techniques and treatment options typically used are:

● Soft tissue massage - including sports and remedial techniques

● Trigger point therapy

● Myofascial dry needling

● Cupping

● Passive stretching (gently moving the affected body part through its range of motion)

● Joint mobilisation

● Hot and/or cold therapy

● Exercise and rehabilitation programs

● Pain management

● Patient education

Myotherapists treat both acute (new-onset) and chronic (long-standing) musculoskeletal conditions. Some of the areas/conditions commonly treated are:

● Back pain

● Neck pain

● Headache

● Jaw pain and/or clicking

● Shoulder pain

● Rotator cuff issues

● Tennis elbow

● Achilles tendinopathy

● Ankle injuries

● Sports injuries

● Occupational injuries

● Fibromyalgia

● Other chronic pain presentations

Myotherapy treatment provides many beneficial effects on the body. Some of these include:

● Decreased muscular pain and stiffness

● Improved flexibility and joint range of motion

● Reduced stress levels

● Improved posture

● Improved quality of sleep

● Enhanced exercise performance

You don’t necessarily need to be in pain to visit a myotherapist. Once your symptoms have settled, treatment may then focus on restoring optimal movement, reducing the likelihood of further injury and keeping you performing at your best.

Myotherapists often work together with other allied health practitioners to enhance patient outcomes and better achieve long-standing results.
