What Is Electro Dry Needling?
Some patients may have experienced dry needling during a treatment from their local practitioner. For those of you who don’t know what dry needling is - it is the insertion of a thin needle that penetrates the skin to stimulate the underlying musculoskeletal tissue to help with the management of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions (e.g. tennis elbow, low back pain and headaches).
Electro dry needling utilises electrical stimulation and is an additional treatment technique on top of your regular dry needling.
How does it work?
Once the needles have been inserted into the targeted area, a wire with crocodile clips is then attached onto the needles. Once everything is in place an electrical device is then turned on and adjusted to the appropriate settings. Electrical impulses are then sent to the targeted area. The frequency and intensity of the electrical impulses are constantly monitored and adjusted for the patient’s comfort.
What does it feel like?
If the goal is to treat a muscle, then the client may feel a thudding sensation local to the area being treated. Sometimes the patient may even see the muscle contracting.
If the goal is to treat/change the sensation to an area (e.g. if a patient is experiencing some numbness in their pinky finger), then the patient may feel a buzzing/tingling sensation to try and bring back some normal sensation to the affected region.
